The Newman School is an independent day school in the Catholic tradition. It serves high-school age students from Greater Boston and around the world and prepares them for success in college. The school is moderately selective with an acceptance rate of about 50%.

The Newman School was founded in 1945 by the late Dr. J. Harry Lynch and a group of colleagues, all alumni of Boston College. It quickly embraced the idea of offering an education that was respected both locally and internationally.

Today the school honors this tradition  with a strong focus on the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IB), a highly regarded, academically rich and rigorous program of study. The goal of the IB prgram is to foster a deep understanding of subjects and encourage critical thinking. This means for students to move beyond their classroom work to broaden their experience with community service. The IB program provides teachers with a rich set of tools and the freedom to teach creatively and to the needs of their students.

Newman School has a culture that is very welcoming and supportive. It provides students from diverse backgrounds an opportunity to pursue serious studies in the company of like-minded peers and instructors.

The school continues to attract students from the Boston area as well as from all over the world.  Its proximity to the Boston Ballet has made The Newman School  home to many students in The Boston Ballet Pre-professional program.

The school’s moto is  ‘Cor ad Cor loquitur’ or ‘Heart speaks to Heart’. This means that the faculty works as a team helping each student to achieve their best.
It also  means that students are considerate.and motivated, forming friendships across grade levels. And it means  that students create a community of shared purpose and responsibility.

Newman offers many activities for its students outside of class. This includes a capella group, band club, book club, business club, chess club, engineering club, NASA club and many more.

An active program of sports (eleven teams) completes the student life including soccer, cross country, crew, sailing, basketball, lacrosse, softball baseball and tennis.
