Seaport Academy is a small alternative school for young men in grades 8–12. It serves students who have difficulties achieving good results in the public school system and provides a unique program where learning is experiential and filled with adventure.
The school was founded in 1999 with the goal of providing an alternative way to educate high school boys. The program is highly personalized and involves customized teaching with learning supports, psychotherapy, counseling, and family therapy. As a Massachusetts state-approved special education school, it serves students who are eligible for out-of-district placements and have been referred to Seaport Academy by their school system.
To better meet the students’s needs, the school has replaced traditional schoolwork with hands-on projects like building bikes or chairs, experimenting with aquaculture, caring for homeless pets, or delivering supplies to local assistance programs. And instead of the traditional classroom, students work in real-life locations in Boston, Charlestown, and Boston Harbor.
Seaport Academy's curriculum is based on Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks. The core curriculum of the school consists of English, math, science, and history. Students who have completed the seaport’s curriculum are encouraged to take courses at nearby Bunker Hill Community College. A 100% pass rate at the MCAS tests is a good indication that the program works.
The school also offers a number of electives such as boating, fishing, engineering, painting, screenplay writing, creative writing, music, woodshop, photography, graphic design, and many more.
In general, the school integrates a lot of physical activities into their school projects. However, regular core sports are available, including sailing, basketball, fitness and weight training, riding, hiking, kayaking, and rock climbing.
